By Clare Boothe Luce
Set in Manhattan in the ’30s, this cunning comedy is all about women. It is the quintessential theatrical cat fight, and these females are cats - cute and cuddly, yet capable of scratching each other’s eyes out.
Mary Haines is complacent in her marriage to Steven. So complacent, she loses her husband to ruthless Crystal Allen, who is aided and abetted by poisonous Sylvia Fowler. Sylvia, however, doesn’t know that her own spouse has taken up with another woman. Throw in a semi-French Countess, a wise-cracking chorus girl, a sweet newly-wed friend, and assorted shop girls, secretaries and beauticians and you get a frothy mixture of gossip, glamour and gold-digging.
The Women was the Desperate Housewives of its day. It opened on Broadway in 1935. In 1939, a now-classic film version starred Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell.
